This is hands down my favorite tradition! I love decorating gingerbread houses. My mom still makes the best gingerbread and patiently makes several batches for multiple houses.
Then, each year, we get together with our neighbors and decorate our houses. Some years the decorations are very elaborate, others are simple. Sometimes we decide to have a theme and sometimes we just make it look pretty.
But one thing always remains the same, and that’s enjoying the time together. We share how the past year had been, reminisce about past years, and laugh at the latest decorating “disaster.”
(By the way I never doubted the cilantro leaf roof, which stayed green!)
Just a note for those wanting to add this tradition to your family: this is not about perfection or even about the gingerbread. It doesn’t even have to be a house, make a train, forest, or just decorate people cookies. Feel free to use graham crackers if that’s what you have. Use any candy or edibles on hand (Halloween candy is great!). But most importantly, have fun!
Well, that’s all the time I have to share family traditions this year. What is your favorite tradition in your family? Do you decorate gingerbread – I’d love to see your creations!
